Fourth Grade

The instructional support in Fourth Grade has focused on a multi-sensory approach to learning combined with reading fluency and comprehension.  During our small group time together we work on fluency techniques, comprehension strategies, and word attack strategies to decode unfamiliar text.  Students work with reading material at his or her instructional level to practice comprehension techniques and fluency strategies.  We use word attack strategies such as syllabication or breaking apart words by syllables and context clues to help identify meaning.  Our comprehension strategies are selected to help students recall and summarize important information from text.  We use the R.A.C.E. strategy to answer questions about the text (Restate the question, Answer the question, Cite text evidence, and Explain your reasoning).  Our mini lessons, text responses and vocabulary are found in our Reading Journals so students can look back and reference their previous work.
